Galangal (Alpinia galanga) - Description

Alpinia galanga, (also Languas galanga), a plant in the ginger family, is an herb used in cooking, especially in Indonesian and Thai cuisines. It is one of four plants known as galangal, and is differentiated from the others with the common name greater galangal (or simply Thai galangal). The galangals are also called blue ginger or Thai ginger. A. galanga is called laos in Indonesian and is the most common form of galangal used in cooking. It is also known as lengkuas and galanga root. In Manipuri, it is known as kanghu.

Galangal (Alpinia galanga) - Blooming

Blooms are followed by ovoid or spherical capsules.

Galangal (Alpinia galanga) - Growth

Grows well in partial shade or bright filtered light. Difficult to grow in containers. Less hardy plants should be raised in a warm greenhouse or conservatory, in a border. A warm greenhouse has a minimum temperature of 55ºF (13ºC). During the day, temperatures should be set to 55-64ºF (13-18ºC) or above, and at night, the temperature should be at 55ºF (13ºC). In frost-free areas, Alpinia works well as a shady border plant.

Galangal (Alpinia galanga) - Planting

Sow seeds when ripe at 68ºF (20ºC). Conduct division in spring. Division entails propagating a plant by splitting it into 2 or more parts. Each part has its own root system and more than one shoot or dormant bud.

Galangal (Alpinia galanga) - Pest

Vulnerable to fungal leaf spots and root rots. Indoors, spider mites may cause problems, especially during dry months.

Galangal (Alpinia galanga) - Interesting facts

Produces ginger-scented underground stems. Found in moist, tropical areas.

Galangal (Alpinia galanga) - Soil and irrigation

Grows best in moist, fertile, humus-rich soil. Indoor plants do well with a soil-based potting mix with up to 25 percent each added leaf mold and composted bark. Water freely during the growing season, less in winter.
