Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata) - Description
Alternanthera is a plant that can be found world wide. It makes ground cover in marshes and wetland areas but is considered a noxious weed. It cannot be controlled by mechanical or chemical means, so bugs such as the alligator weed stem borer are used to control the population.
Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata) - Blooming
Flowers are not a prominent feature on Joseph's Coat. Flowering can be fostered by increasing light intensity, but increased light exposure can cause the foliage to curl.
Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata) - Growth
Can grow to 1 foot tall. Growth can be stunted by lack of nitrogen, cold temperatures and over-watering.
Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata) - Planting
Easily propagated via cuttings. Plant in full sun or in lightly shaded areas. Soil should be well-draining with a pH of between 5.5 and 6, and have good water retention capabilities. Ideal temperatures range from about 68 to 75 degrees.
Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata) - Pest
Whiteflies, aphids, leaf miners and fungus gnats can all cause damage.
Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata) - Interesting facts
The common name "Joseph's Coat" for some of the species in this genus is inspired by the multiplicity of colors and green tones found on the leaves.
Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata) - Soil and irrigation
Needs moderate water. Can tolerate most soils as long as they are well-drained. Does not do well with salty soil. Avoid over-watering, since the roots are susceptible to root rot.
