Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata 'Purple Knight') - Description

Bold masses of dark metallic leaves on vigorous, fast growing plants - a great choice for mid-border hedges or instant spots of deep rich color. The purple stems spread out wide, loaded with glistening, two-toned foliage - purple on top, burgundy below. Give "Purple Knight" a lot of space - it grows big and fast, up to 3' tall and 3' across. Looks spectacular also in large tubs. An unusual and distinctive new annual. Full sun / part sun.

Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata 'Purple Knight') - Blooming

Flowers are not a prominent feature on Joseph's Coat. Flowering can be fostered by increasing light intensity, but increased light exposure can cause the foliage to curl.

Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata 'Purple Knight') - Growth

Can grow to 1 foot tall. Growth can be stunted by lack of nitrogen, cold temperatures and over-watering.

Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata 'Purple Knight') - Planting

Easily propagated via cuttings. Plant in full sun or in lightly shaded areas. Soil should be well-draining with a pH of between 5.5 and 6, and have good water retention capabilities. Ideal temperatures range from about 68 to 75 degrees.

Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata 'Purple Knight') - Pest

Whiteflies, aphids, leaf miners and fungus gnats can all cause damage.

Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata 'Purple Knight') - Interesting facts

The common name "Joseph's Coat" for some of the species in this genus is inspired by the multiplicity of colors and green tones found on the leaves.

Joy Weed (Alternanthera dentata 'Purple Knight') - Soil and irrigation

Needs moderate water. Can tolerate most soils as long as they are well-drained. Does not do well with salty soil. Avoid over-watering, since the roots are susceptible to root rot.
