Pineapple (Ananas comosus) - Description

The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical plant with edible multiple fruit consisting of coalesced berries, and the most economically significant plant in the Bromeliaceae family. Pineapples may be cultivated from a crown cutting of the fruit, possibly flowering in 20–24 months and fruiting in the following six months. Pineapple does not ripen significantly post-harvest.

Pineapple (Ananas comosus) - Blooming

Showy flowers are borne in summer in cone-like inflorescences. Followed by fleshy, swollen fruits that are edible.

Pineapple (Ananas comosus) - Growth

Pineapples grow best with full sun, or full light, and low to moderate humidity, in a draft-free site. They do not tolerate frost. Ananas should be grown as a houseplant, or raised in a warm greenhouse, in regions where temperatures drop below 59ºF (15ºC). A warm greenhouse has a minimum temperature of 55ºF (13C). During the day, temperatures should be set to 55-64ºF (13-18ºC) or above, and at night, the temperature should be at 55F (13ºC). In tropical areas, Ananas works well in a border.

Pineapple (Ananas comosus) - Planting

Propagate Ananas in early summer by rooting basal offsets. Another propagation method entails cutting off the leafy rosette at the top of the fruit, allowing it to callus for a day or two, and then rooting it in a mix of barely moist peat and sand, at a temperature of 70F (21C), in indirect light.

Pineapple (Ananas comosus) - Pest

Pineapples are commonly affected by wet root rot caused by fungi. They are also prone to fruit rot, mealybugs, and scale insects.

Pineapple (Ananas comosus) - Interesting facts

There are about 5-6 species of Ananas, endemic to South America. Pineapples are called multiple fruits, because multiple flowers produce fruits that are fused together to produced what looks like a single fruit. The hummingbird is the natural pollinator of pineapples.

Pineapple (Ananas comosus) - Soil and irrigation

Ananas grows well in soil that is fertile, humus-rich, and well-draining. Terrestrial bromeliad potting mixes work fine for indoor plants. Water liberally during the growing season, less in winter, but still enough to keep the soil barely moist.
