Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) - Description

Anthriscus sylvestris, known as cow parsley, wildchervil, wild beaked parsley, keck, or Queen Anne's lace, is a herbaceous biennial or short-lived perennial plant in the family Apiaceae, genus Anthriscus. It is also sometimes called mother-die (especially in the UK), a name that is also applied to the common hawthorn. It is native to Europe, western Asia and northwestern Africa; in the south of its range in the Mediterranean region, it is limited to higher altitudes.

Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) - Growth

Chervil does well in partial shade and will grow to approx. 2 ft. tall. Used for culinary purposes. Cow parsley (A. sylvestris) makes a nice meadow plant, and its dark foliage displays good contrast for a herbaceous border.

Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) - Planting

Sow seeds for A. cerefolium directly into the ground from early spring to midsummer. Propagate perennials by sowing seeds into containers in fall or spring in a cold frame. Can also propagate from root cuttings in midwinter.Plant A. sylvestris alone. Select seeds from plants with dark, purple-brown foliage.

Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) - Pest

Slugs, snails, and caterpillars are a threat to young growth. Anthriscus is also prone to powdery mildew.

Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) - Interesting facts

Anthriscus is native to grasslands, wastelands, and light woodlands in temperate areas of the Northern hemisphere. Chervil is used similar to parsely, but with a faint liquorice flavor.

Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) - Soil and irrigation

Will grow in any soil as long as it's well-draining. Plant requires regular irrigation. Water A. cerefolium during dry periods to prevent bolting from occuring. Make sure the root zone is always moist. Providing a mulch with organic material around the plants will keep the roots cool and moist.
