Arabis (Arabis procurrens) - Description
Arabis procurrens (syn. A. ferdinandi-coburgi), the spreading rock cress, is a species of flowering plant in the family Brassicaceae. It is a spreading evergreen or semi-evergreen perennial, forming a dense mat of foliage, with loose racemes of white flowers in spring, suitable for cultivation in the alpine garden. The specific epithet procurrens means "spreading underground". The variety A. procurrens 'Variegata', with white-edged leaves, has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Arabis (Arabis procurrens) - Blooming
The flowers come in clusters of small white, pink, or rose purple flowers. They flower in the spring.
Arabis (Arabis procurrens) - Growth
Annuals and evergreen perennials. Rockcress does well in full sun. These are low-growing/spreading plants that would make good candidates for edges, rock gardens or ground covers. All varieties of Rockcress have attractive year round foliage.
Arabis (Arabis procurrens) - Planting
Propagate from the seed. Sow in containers in a cold frame in fall (for protection and to ensure hardiness). Separate rosettes in fall. Can also propagate from softwood cuttings in summer.
Arabis (Arabis procurrens) - Pest
Aphids and Arabis midge. Once the Arabis midge has attacked flower shoots, dispose of the shoots immediately. Arabis is also prone to white rust, downy mildew, and rust, all of which are quite common.
Arabis (Arabis procurrens) - Interesting facts
Arabis is native to Europe, Asia, and North America. Occurs mainly in rocky, mountainous regions.
Arabis (Arabis procurrens) - Soil and irrigation
Needs good drainage and moderate water. Water liberally during the growing season, much less in winter. A. belpharophylla needs shelter from winter moisture. Best grown in an alpine house. Prefers an equal mix of loam, leaf mold, and sharp sand. Tolerates poor, infertile soils and dry conditions.
