Astelia (Astelia banksii) - Description

Astelia banksii is an evergreen silver-green plant from the beaches of New Zealand. It likes it best in partial shade and in fertile and well-drained soil.

Astelia (Astelia banksii) - Blooming

Blooms unisexual flowers in spring or summer followed by orange or red berries. The tepals of the flowers often remain when the berries are produced.

Grows best in sun with some midday shade. In frost-free areas, Astelia works well in a peat bed or rock garden. Where Astelia is not growing hardy, raise plants in a cool greenhouse. Cool greenhouses have a minimum temperature of 35ºF (2ºC). During the day, set temperatures between 41-50ºF (5-10ºC), and at night, keep the temperature at 36ºF (2ºC).

There are around 25 known species of Astelia, native to the subalpine and mountainous areas of New Guinea, Australasia, Hawaii, and southern South America. A. chathamica and A. nervosa are known for their attractive foliage.
