Golden Goddess Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex) - Description
This cultivar is a wonderful landscaping variety of bamboo. 'Golden Goddess' is under the 'clumping' variety of bamboo that spreads very slowly as opposed to a runner bamboo that can spread fast and aggressively by its quick growing underground branches (or Rhizomes). Golden Goddess makes a wonderful evergreen screen as well as a great container plant, for some vertical gardening. For the best look irrigate fairly often, even though the plants, once established, are quite drought tolerant, but can look a little rough if in a drying out stage.
Golden Goddess Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex) - Blooming
Like most grasses, species in the Bambusa genus have inconspicuous flowers.
Golden Goddess Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex) - Growth
Bamboos have a wide variety of growing styles, but the genus Bambusa includes species that are called clumping bamboos. The rhizomes grow only a few inches from the base of the clustered shoots meaning that species in the Bambusa genus are not as invasive as other "Bamboos". Bambusas do best in tropical and subtropical climates. Most Bambusas are hardy to 15F to 20F/-9C to -7C. B. vulgaris 'Vittata' is hardy to 32F/0C.
Golden Goddess Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex) - Planting
Bamboos are easily propagated by planting the rhizome underground.
Golden Goddess Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex) - Pest
Young shoots are susceptible to slugs. Other problems include fungal leaf spots, rust, and dieback.
Golden Goddess Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex) - Interesting facts
Bambusa includes 100-120 species, mostly cultivated for their foliage. Some species, such as B. ventricosa, has unusually swollen internodes.
Golden Goddess Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex) - Soil and irrigation
Does best in moist, humus-rich, fertile soil. Water moderately, and maintain high humidity if possible.
