Pindo Palm (Butia capitata) - Description

Butia capitata is native to Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. It is very hardy and slowly grows to heights of 10 to 20 feet tall with a crown of feathery gray-green leaves, which spread 10 to 15 feet wide. Long spikes of small yellow flowers are followed by showy clusters of yellow to red edible fruits in the summer.

Monoecious, single-stemmed palms. Does best in full sun exposure or light shade. Hardy to 15F/-9C. Pindo Palms are slow growing up to 20 ft. tall. Tolerates periods of 32F (0C) in areas with dry, sunny weather conditions. In less hardy areas, Butia works well as a houseplant (young plants), or grown in a cool greehouse or conservatory. Can be grown outdoors in frost-free areas as specimen trees. Butia grows best in cool, dry areas.
