Rose-Painted Calathea (Calathea roseopicta) - Description
Calathea roseopicta (rose-painted calathea) is a species of plant in the family Marantaceae, native to northwest Brazil. It is a clump-forming evergreen perennial growing to 50 cm (20 in). The large rounded leaves are dark green above, red below, marked heavily with cream or pink stripes "painted" along the veins and midriff, with feathered margins. It is tender, with a minimum temperature of 16 °C (61 °F) required, and in temperate areas is cultivated indoors as a houseplant. This plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Rose-Painted Calathea (Calathea roseopicta) - Blooming
Blooms small flowers, in pairs. However, flowers are normally not produced in cultivation.
Rose-Painted Calathea (Calathea roseopicta) - Growth
Grows best with partial shade, or bright indirect/filtered light. Prefers high humidity, draft-free conditions, and a constant temperature. Where Calathea is not hardy, raise plants indoors as houseplants, or in a warm or temperate greenhouse. In warmer areas, Calathea works great in a border or grown among other shrubs.
Rose-Painted Calathea (Calathea roseopicta) - Planting
Conduct division of the clumps in spring. Make sure to provide plants with warm, humid conditions until they have re-established.
Rose-Painted Calathea (Calathea roseopicta) - Pest
Prone to damage by aphids, mealybugs, bud mites, and spider mites. Also watch out for flouride toxicity and fungal and bacterial leaf spots. Another problem is leaf necrosis which commonly arises in low humidity.
Rose-Painted Calathea (Calathea roseopicta) - Interesting facts
Young plants are known to have a different foliage size and color from mature plants. Because the leaves are so large and strong, they are often used to make containers. Most famous are the rice containers sold by villagers in Thailand.
Rose-Painted Calathea (Calathea roseopicta) - Soil and irrigation
Does well in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Soilless or soil-based potting mixes work fine for indoor plants. Water freely during active growth, moderaterly in winter. Be sure to pot on in late spring each year.
