Balloon Vine (Cardiospermum halicacabum) - Description

Cardiospermum halicacabum, known as the Balloon plant or Love in a puff, is a climbing plant widely distributed in tropical and subtropical Africa and Asia. Often found as a weed along roads and rivers, it has been examined for antidiarrhoeal as well as homoeopathic medicinal properties. In New Zealand it is listed on the National Pest Plant Accord which identifies pest plants that are prohibited from sale, and commercial propagation and distribution. It is one among the "Ten Sacred Flowers of Kerala State in India, collectively known as Dasapushpam.

Evergreen, perennial, woody-stemmed tendril climbers. Balloon Vines do well in full sun. Grown for their fern-like foliage. Works best, in warmer regions, trained over a tall tree stump, archway, pergola, or arbor. In areas where plants are not hardy, grow outdoors as annuals, or in a temperate greenhouse. Although they are perennial plants, they are often grown as annuals or biennials.
