Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) - Description

C. japonicum is native to China and Japan. It's foliage changes color during growing season, from a reddish purple to a bluish green in the summer, then turns yellow to apricot in the autumn. The trees that grow in acid soil will have the best color. It is rather slow growing.

Blooms small red flowers in early spring. Female and male flowers are borne on separate plants.

Deciduous tree. Can deal with full sun, but performs better in light shade. Can reach 40 ft. tall but does so slowly. Nice fall foliage color. C. japonicum grows best as a specimen tree in a site with lots of space. It is also often grown as a street tree.

Native to China and Japan. Where conditions are suitable, it is fast-growing, but it is very sensitive to drought and needs deep, permanently moist soil. Autumn leaves of the tree are thought to smell like brown sugar. There is only one known species of Cercidiphyllum, C. japonicum.
