Katsura Tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Pendula') - Description

Cercidiphyllum japonicum, known as the Katsura (from its Japanese name カツラ, 桂), is a species of flowering tree in the family Cercidiphyllaceae native to China and Japan. The tree is deciduous and grows to 10–45 metres tall, with a trunk diameter of up to 2 metres (rarely more). The shoots are dimorphic, with long shoots forming the structure of the branches, and bearing short shoots from their second year onward.

Deciduous tree. Can deal with full sun, but performs better in light shade. Can reach 40 ft. tall but does so slowly. Nice fall foliage color. C. japonicum grows best as a specimen tree in a site with lots of space. It is also often grown as a street tree.

Native to China and Japan. Where conditions are suitable, it is fast-growing, but it is very sensitive to drought and needs deep, permanently moist soil. Autumn leaves of the tree are thought to smell like brown sugar. There is only one known species of Cercidiphyllum, C. japonicum.
