Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) - Description
C. linearis is native to desert washes and steambeds below 5,000 feet from California to Texas, and south to Mexico. It grows fast at first, then slows. With age, it develops shaggy bark and twisting trunks. It bears narrow 2 to 5 inch willow-type leaves.
Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) - Blooming
From spring to fall, Desert Willows produce fragrant flowers that come in several different colors such as reddish purple, lavender, rose, pink or white. The flowers look like smaller versions of the Cattleya orchid flower.
Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) - Growth
Evergreen shrub or tree. Desert Willows, as their common name indicates, perform best full sun. They grow up to 30 ft. tall and 20 ft. wide. If growing under glass, keep humidity low. In warm and dry areas, grow C. linearis in a border. In areas where Chilopsis is not growing hardy, raise plants in a warm greenhouse. A warm greenhouse has a minimum temperature of 55°F (13°C). During the day, temperatures should be set to 55-64°F (13-18°C) or above, and at night, the temperature should be at 55°F (13°C).
Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) - Planting
As soon as ripe, sow seeds at 70-79°F (21-26°C). Can propagate with soft or hardwood cuttings in spring or summer. Softwood cuttings are cuttings taken from young, non-woody growth.
Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) - Pest
Seedlings are susceptible to root rot.
