Columnea (Columnea crassifolia) - Description
Evergreen shrubs or subshrubs, well-adapted to warm, humid areas. Where not hardy, works well as houseplants in pots or hanging baskets, or in a warm greenhouse. Blooms beautiful tubular flowers from spring to fall. Nice epiphytic plant where hardy.
Columnea (Columnea crassifolia) - Blooming

Columnea (Columnea crassifolia) - Growth
Does best with partial shade, or bright filtered light, with high humidity. Where Columnea is not growing hardy, raise plants indoors, as houseplants in half-pots or moss-lined hanging baskets, or in a warm greenhouse. A warm greenhouse has a minimum temperature of 55°F (13°C). During the day, temperatures should be set to 55-64°F (13-18°C) or above, and at night, the temperature should be at 55°F (13°C). In warm, humid areas, grow Columnea in shade among trees and shrubs. Can also grow epiphytically.
Columnea (Columnea crassifolia) - Planting
Propagate from root tip cuttings in spring with bottom heat. It is best to propagate plants every 2-3 years to maintain plant vigor.
Columnea (Columnea crassifolia) - Pest
Prone to aphids, spider mites, bud mites, fungal spots, and tabacco mosaic virus.
Columnea (Columnea crassifolia) - Interesting facts
There are 150 known species in the genus Columnea, native to the West Indies, Mexico, Central America, and tropical South America. Usually in the wild, Columnea grows epiphytically.
Columnea (Columnea crassifolia) - Soil and irrigation
Does best in coarse, open, humus-rich, moderately fertile soil. Water freely during the growing season. Avoid overwatering which may cause stem and root rot. Provide moderate water in the winter season, try to keep the foliage dry.Soilless potting mixes work fine for indoor plants grown in pots.
