Common Quince (Cydonia oblonga) - Description

The quince /ˈkwɪns/, is a small, deciduous tree that bears a pome fruit, similar in appearance to a pear, and bright golden-yellow when mature. The fruit is edible when cooked and there is a long history of this, but the tree is also grown for its attractive pale pink blossom and other ornamental qualities.

Common Quince (Cydonia oblonga) - Blooming

Blooms bowl-shaped flowers followed by fruit that resemble pears.

Common Quince (Cydonia oblonga) - Growth

Deciduous tree or shrub, found in woodland margins and rocky slopes. Grows best with full sun exposure, and fruits well during long, hot summers. In areas with cool summers, or where winter temperatures fall below 5F (-15C), fan train Cydonia against a wall. Establish a framework of fruiting spurs in the first 3 to 4 winters.

Common Quince (Cydonia oblonga) - Planting

Propagate from the seed in fall. Sow seeds in a seedbed. Quince can also be propagated from cuttings. Insert greenwood cuttings and semi-ripe cuttings in summer, and hardwood cuttings in fall or early winter. Greenwood cuttings are taken from shoot-tips of plants, and are harder than softwood cuttings. Semi-ripe cuttings are cuttings taken from semi-mature wood, and hardwood cuttings are cuttings taken from mature wood.

Common Quince (Cydonia oblonga) - Pest

Vulnerable to scale insects, aphids, mealybugs, caterpillars, Japanese beetles, crown gall, rust, brown rot, powdery mildew, and fire blight.

Common Quince (Cydonia oblonga) - Interesting facts

There is only one known species of Cydonia, C. oblonga (Common quince), native to southwestern Asia. Cydonia is often confused with the flowering quinces, Chaenomeles, which tend to produce smaller fruits. The fruits of quince are only edible when cooked. The cultivar 'Vranja' bears fragrant fruit.

Common Quince (Cydonia oblonga) - Soil and irrigation

Grows best in soil that is fertile, moist, yet well-drained.
