Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) - Description
Solanum betaceum is a small tree or shrub in the flowering plant family Solanaceae "the nightshade plant". It is best known as the species that bears the tamarillo, an egg-shaped edible fruit. It is also known as the tree tomato.

Blooms 5-petaled flowers followed by tomato-like fruits, borne from summer to winter. The fruits are generally only edible when fully ripe.

Perennials and evergreen shrubs, trees, and climbers, found in tropical regions. Tree tomatos grow best in sun or partial shade with moderate humidity. Where Cyphomandra is not growing hardy, raise plants in a temperate greenhouse. Temperate greenhouses have daytime temperatures set between 50-55F (10-13C), and a nighttime temperature of 45F (7C). In warmer areas, tree tomatos work well in a shrub border, or a courtyard or fruit garden.
