Dove Tree (Davidia involucrata) - Description
D. involucrata is native to china. It bears roundish to heart-shaped green leaves. It comes into bloom in the spring. It bears small clustered, red-anthered flowers between large between large white bracts.
Dove Tree (Davidia involucrata) - Blooming
Blooms in the spring. The common name, Dove Tree, is derived from the flowers and their subtending bracts. The two bracts are large and white and give the impression that a dove is perched upon the branch. Often times, the Dove Tree takes ten years before it will bloom (the exception is the variety 'Sonoma' which takes only two years) and then will alternate years between light and heavy blooms.
Dove Tree (Davidia involucrata) - Growth
Deciduous tree. Davidia does well in full sun but requires partial in the hottest of climates. Will grow up to 65 ft. tall and 40 ft. wide. Protect from strong winds. D. involucrata is mainly grown as a specimen tree.
Dove Tree (Davidia involucrata) - Planting
The Dove Tree should be planted by itself so it does not have to compete with other flowering trees. Propagate by sowing whole ripe fruits in either a seedbed, or in containers in an open frame. Germination takes about 2 winters and will occur in spring. If propagating by seeds, be aware that flowering may not occur for at most 20 years. Can also propagate with leaf-bud (root in fall) or hardwood cuttings (root in winter).
Dove Tree (Davidia involucrata) - Pest
Uncommon.
Dove Tree (Davidia involucrata) - Interesting facts
