Larkspur (Delphinium elatum 'Black Eyed Angels') - Description

This tall "angel" floats over your landscape in dramatic fashion. The 3-5 foot tall plant has strong stems that produce large spires of frilly white blooms with black bee centers. Delphinium elatum 'Black Eyed Angels' make a great cut flower arrangement and can also be dried for lasting beauty.

Larkspur (Delphinium elatum 'Black Eyed Angels') - Blooming

Many Delphiniums are blue, but they come in several colors including white, various shades of red, pink, lavender and purple.

Larkspur (Delphinium elatum 'Black Eyed Angels') - Growth

Delphiniums are perennial plants although they are sometimes treated like an annual or biennial. Delphinium does best in full sun.

Larkspur (Delphinium elatum 'Black Eyed Angels') - Planting

Delphiniums thrive in the cooler climates of the north country, though they will grow as far south as zone 7. Delphiniums can be grown in full sun or partial shade, though full sun may help to prevent powdery mildew. When planting, be sure to set the crown at or above soil level to avoid rot. Since their stems are hollow, taller varieties of Delphiniums should be staked to prevent damage from wind and rain.

Larkspur (Delphinium elatum 'Black Eyed Angels') - Pest

Slugs, snails, and cyclamen mites. Other problems include Southern blight, powdery mildew, bacterial and fungal spots, crown and root rot, gray mold, white rot, rust, damping off, white smut, and leaf smut.

Larkspur (Delphinium elatum 'Black Eyed Angels') - Soil and irrigation

Hybrid Bee Delphiniums grow best in rich, well-drained soil with a basic pH. If your soil is naturally acidic, adding lime will help to provide these conditions.
