Leopard's Bane (Doronicum orientale) - Description
Doronicum orientale (Leopard's Bane) is an ornamental plant in the Asteraceae family. It is a hardy (to zone 3) perennial, blooming in early spring. It has daisy-like yellow flowers on long, straight stems, which attract nectar-eating insects. The plants grow to approximately 2 feet tall. Likes both shade and sun. All parts of this plant are poisonous to humans, if ingested.
Leopard's Bane (Doronicum orientale) - Blooming
These plants require a period of cold temperatures (aka vernalization period) to induce flowering. Weather that hovers around an average of 40F for nine weeks will provide a long enough cold period to provide enough floral bud induction to result in very vigorous floral blooms in early spring. They are noted for having a very long bloom season however. They often start in very early spring and will last well into autumn.
Leopard's Bane (Doronicum orientale) - Growth
Leopard's Banes do well in partial shade in the warmest of climates. These plants grow best in cool weather, where they can take full sun and grow vigorously.
Leopard's Bane (Doronicum orientale) - Planting
Easily propagated by seed. Giving a very light covering of compost will improve the number of seeds that germinate. They can also be propagated by dividing overcrowded clumps.
Leopard's Bane (Doronicum orientale) - Pest
Very few pests have a significant affinity for Leopard's Bane. Rarely, however, they can be attacked by aphids, spider mites and thrips.
Leopard's Bane (Doronicum orientale) - Interesting facts
Leopard's Bane is not only the bane to the leopard. All parts of this plant are poisonous to people if they are ingested.
Leopard's Bane (Doronicum orientale) - Soil and irrigation
Doronicums require regular waterings, but prefer soil that drains well as they cannot tolerate overly wet nor overly dry soil. Soils that are slightly acidic (~6 pH) provide the best environment for vigorous growth.
