Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) - Description
Elettaria, common names green cardamom, true cardamom, and Ceylon cardamom (E. repens), is a genus of one or two species of cardamoms, native to southeastern Asia from India south to Sri Lanka and east to Malaysia and western Indonesia, where it grows in tropical rainforests.
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) - Blooming
Blooms during the summer with 3-petaled flowers followed by spherical, aromatic seed capsules.
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) - Growth
Evergreen, rhizomatous perennials, found in tropical rainforests. Grows best in full sun, with some midday shade. Requires tropical conditions to flower and fruit well. Makes a nice foliage plant in temperate regions or warm greenhouses. Grow in a shady bed or border.
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) - Planting
When ripe, sow seeds at 66-75°F (19-24°C). Conduct division in spring. Division entails propagating a plant by splitting it into 2 or more parts. Each part has its own root system and more than one shoot or dormant bud.
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) - Pest
Prone to thrips, cardamom virus, pod rot, and fungal root rot.
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) - Soil and irrigation
Does well in fertile, open, humus-rich soil. Water freely during growth, less in winter. Fertile, soil based potting mixes with additional leaf mold or ground bark work well for indoor plants.
