Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) - Description
The Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) is a tropical to sub tropical evergreen orchid native over a widespread area from North central to South America. This species tends to be a bit tougher than other orchids being hardy all the way down to zone 10a up to 14. The Crucifix Orchid is a terrestrial type meaning it grows on the ground in denser soils. It has long leafy stems that produce aerial roots. The aerial roots coming from the stem is the main distinguishing trait that sets them apart from other Crucifix types that only produce roots from the base. Plants grow fast typically reaching heights of 3 feet and spreading into a large mass. Plants bloom from the top of the plant in dense bunches of long lasting red and orange flowers.
Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) - Blooming
Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) will bloom for many months starting mid-spring through early-fall. Plants bloom from the top of the plant in long lasting dense bunches of 1 inch flowers. Flowers are red/orange with yellow throats. This particular species of Crucifix Orchid does not produce nectar in the flowers.
Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) - Growth
The Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) is a terrestrial Orchid. Terrestrial refers to orchids that grow on the ground in denser soil types. It is a fast grower reaching heights around 3 feet. If intended to keep upright stems should be supported. This species of Orchid produces aerial roots from the stems. Other Crucifix Orchids do not share this trait. Because of this plants tend to spread out quite a bit when the stems fall over and root into the ground.
Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) - Planting
The Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) can be grown easily outside in the landscape in temperate climates where the temperature doesn't go below 30 F. Choose a location that gets partial shade to full sun. Make sure the location has a well draining soil that stays moist but does not get overly saturated. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and deep enough that the top stays flush with the soil surface. Fill in the remaining space around the root ball with loose top soil and water in well.In locations where temperatures go below 30 F the Crucifix Orchid needs to be grown in a container so that it can be moved inside. Choose a terrestrial orchid planting mix made specifically for orchids. Make sure the container has plenty of holes for drainage. Choose one a size bigger then the previous. Repot when plants start over flowing their containers. Plants can also be divided when too big. Choose a well lit area inside to encourage optimal growth.
Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) - Pest
Epidendrum orchids suffer from a wide range of pests and diseases. The most typical pests being spider mites, mealy bugs, whiteflies or aphids. The most common disease problems are associated with viral problems, black rot, rust and leaf spots.
Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) - Interesting facts
Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) is a common roadside weed in Central America.
Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) - Soil and irrigation
The Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum radicans) is a terrestrial type that grows on the ground in denser soil types in its native environment. When planting in the landscape it requires a well draining soil. The plant likes lots of water but doesn't want saturated roots. When planting in a container use an orchid potting soil made specifically for terrestrial types. These potting soils will be more dense then the type used for epiphytes which normally grow in trees. Keep plants well watered and don't allow to get too dry.
