Epiphyllum crenatum, the Crenate Orchid Cactus, is a species of cactus and one of the most important parents in creating the Epiphyllum-hybrids commonly cultivated throughout the world. It is cultivated for its beautiful diurnal flowers.

Flowers are short lived, lasting for 2 or more days. Most species are nocturnal. Blooms are followed by small fruit which is edible.Epiphyllum flowers the best when potbound.

Epiphytic cacti. Grows best with partial shade and moderate to high humidity. Orchid cacti require a minimum year round temperature of 50ºF (10ºC). However, for the best cultivation, temperatures should be at least 59ºF (15ºC) in spring. Orchid cacti will die if subject to 100ºF (38ºC) or higher.In places that fall under 50ºF (10ºC), raise Epiphyllum indoors as houseplants, or in a warm greenhouse. In warmer areas, Orchid cacti work well in hanging baskets as patio plants. They are also suitable for a shaded courtyard.

There are around 20 known species in the genus Epiphyllum, native to rainforest from S. Mexico to Argentina, and also in the West Indies. Epiphyllum species are somtimes added to the hallucinogenic drink called Ayahuasca, traditionally prepared by the Amerindians of Amazonian Columbia.
