Asafoetida (Ferula communis) - Description

Ferula communis (the giant fennel) is a species in the genus Ferula of the Apiaceae. Despite the name, the plant is not a type of fennel proper, which belongs to another genus (Foeniculum). Ferula communis is a tall herbaceous perennial. It is found in Mediterranean woodlands and shrublands. It was known in antiquity as narthex. The name of the phenolic compound ferulic acid comes from the giant fennel Latin name, where the compound can be isolated.

Blooms white, greenish white, yellow, or purple flowers. May take several years to flower. They also often die after seeding.

Taprooted, aromatic, herbaceous perennials that grow in rough, grassy habitats, roadsides, and dry slopes. Does well with full sun exposure. Grow at the back of a border or in an open site in a wild garden as an ornamental plant.
