Scarlet Avens (Geum quellyon) - Description

Geum quellyon, commonly called Scarlet avens. Chilean avens, or Grecian rose, is a perennial herb of the Rosaceae family, native to the Central Region of Chile. It has been used in the traditional medicine of the Mapuche Amerindians of Chile to treat tooth neuralgia, gastric inflammation, prostatitis and to regulate menstruation. The methanolic extract is obtained from the root of Geum quellyon. The methanolic extract contains tannin compounds, and tannins have been shown to have antitumor activity.

Cut away flowers to promote continued blooming into the fall. The fuzzy seed heads are also attractive, so leave a few of the spent flowers to develope into these if you wish.

Grow in sun, but it will tolerate some shade. They prefer cool summer climates, after noon shade is best with warmer summers. Division is needed in spring if plants become too crowded.
