Tuberous perennials. Does best with full sun. H. tuberosus flourishes in dry, sunny sites. Grows well in mixed or herbaceous borders. Often naturalized into grass. Also works well as an early-flowering container plant. In less hardy areas, grow Hermodactylus in an alpine house.

Snake's Head Irises do best with regular water, but it is important to not let them stay in standing water for too long. To prevent standing water, use well-draining soil. Does best in medium rich, alkaline soil with excellent drainage. Needs protection from excess summer rain.
