Hesperaloe (Hesperaloe funifera) - Description
H. funifera is native to northern Mexico. It bears greenish white flowers in late spring or early summer.
Hesperaloe (Hesperaloe funifera) - Blooming
The pink to rose red flowers bloom in clusters on racemes in early summer. Removing the stalks after the flowers have faded encourages repeated blooming.
Hesperaloe (Hesperaloe funifera) - Growth
Hesperaloe forms yucca-like clumps, and prefers full or half sun. Where Hesperaloe is not growing hardy, raise plants indoors in a temperate greenhouse or conservatory. Temperate greenhouses have daytime temperatures set between 50-55°F (10-13°C), and a nighttime temperature of 45°F (7°C).In warmer areas, grow Red Yuccas in a desert garden or in containers.
Hesperaloe (Hesperaloe funifera) - Planting
Propagate by division in winter, or you can plant seeds year-round. Division entails propagating a plant by splitting it into 2 or more parts. Each part has its own root system and more than one shoot or dormant bud.
Hesperaloe (Hesperaloe funifera) - Pest
Scale insects. Aphids are frequent visitors during the flowering season.
Hesperaloe (Hesperaloe funifera) - Interesting facts
Hesperaloe occur in the moderately arid regions of Texas and Northern Mexico. Species are perennial succulents that resemble the Yucca, although their flowers are more similar to those of Aloe.
Hesperaloe (Hesperaloe funifera) - Soil and irrigation
Hesperaloe grows best in well-drained, gravelly or sandy soil. Prefers that the soil is neutral to acidic. Standard cactus potting mix works fine for indoor plants. Drought tolerant, it can survive on less than 10" of water a year, but growth and flowering improves with supplemental watering once every several weeks from late spring to early fall. Best to keep almost dry in winter. Do not overwater.
