Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana) - Description
Howea forsteriana (kentia palm or thatch palm) is a species of flowering plant in the palm family Arecaeae, endemic to Lord Howe Island in Australia. It is also widely grown on Norfolk Island. It is a relatively slow-growing palm, eventually growing up to 10 m (33 ft) tall by 6 m (20 ft) wide.
Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana) - Growth
Kentia Palms can withstand a wide range of light conditions. They do best with full sun as long as they are protected when the weather gets too hot, but they can tolerate shady indoor locations. They do best with moderate humidity, but can withstand very dry conditions as well.
Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana) - Planting
Plant seeds when they have ripened and the temperature is averaging 80°F (27°C).
Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana) - Pest
Prone to root rot, scale insects and spider mites.
Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana) - Interesting facts
Kentia Palms are considered a threatened species by the World Conservation Union. The natural habitat is secluded to an island off the East coast of Australia. The seeds have a low germination rate, which may have led to the palm's dwindling population. Entrepeneurs have recognized the horticultural value of the Kentia Palm and have started propagating the plant for sale as a ornamental palm.
Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana) - Soil and irrigation
When actively growing, provide a moderate amount of water so that the soil is moist. Provide little water in winter. Does best in well-drained soil.
