White Walnut (Juglans cinerea) - Description
J. cinerea is native to eastern North America. It resembles J. nigra, but it is smaller, it's leaves have fewer leaflets, and the nuts are elongated or oval instead of round.
White Walnut (Juglans cinerea) - Growth
Walnut trees. Some have edible nuts. Some exude a toxic chemical from roots that inhibits the growth of some plants, extending 50-80 feet from trunk. Grass grows near them, though. The black walnut tree (J. nigra) grows to 75 feet tall. Leaves are divided into 5 inch long leaflets. The edible nuts are encased in 2 inch green husks.
White Walnut (Juglans cinerea) - Planting
Plant seeds as soon as they ripen.
White Walnut (Juglans cinerea) - Interesting facts
The wood is highly valued for furniture making. Although all species have edible kernels, only Juglans regia's nuts have a large enough flesh and thin enough shell to be produced commercially.
White Walnut (Juglans cinerea) - Soil and irrigation
Deep, rich, most soil. Somewhat tolerates drier sites.
