K. uvaria bears leaves to 1 inch wide amd 2 feet long with coral red buds that open to orange or deep yellow blossoms in the summer.

Inflorescences of flowers look like glowing pokers or torches, hence the common name Red-Hot Poker. Most species flower in the summer and repeat flowering through the growing season. Plants attract bees.
