L. maritima is native to the Mediterranean. It bears narrow 0.5 to 2 inch long lance-shaped leaves with crowded clusters of tiny four-petaled white flowers with a sweet honey scent.

Alyssums bloom scented flowers in the spring and summer in colors such as white, pink, rose-red, violet, and lilac. To promote longer flowering cycle, prune plant back by 50 percent after the first blossoms.
