M. decussata is native to the Siberian mountains and hardy to any amount of cold. It bears green foliage in summer, turning purplish or reddish brown in winter.

Low-growing, needled, coniferous shrub that spreads to several feet wide and less than 2 feet tall. Foliage is juniper like, but not as prickly, and turns bronze or purple in winter and then greens again in spring. Microbiota grows best in full sun-partial shade. Works well in a shrub border or as a groundcover.

Interestingly enough, this plant was not known to the Western World until around the 1970's. The plant was discovered in 1923 in the former Soviet Union, but due to political secrecy this plant was not known beyond Russian horticulturalists and biologists.
