Banana Shrub (Michelia figo) - Description
M. figo is densely clothed with glossy, leathery, 3-inch leaves. The plant blooms more heaily in spring, and produces scattered flowers throughout summer. It's blooms are 1 to 1.5 inches wide, creamy yellow with a thin brownish purple border on each segment. A notable feature of this plant is it's powerful, fruity fragrance.

Magnolia-like mid-spring flowers, borne singly, smell richly of fruit. Yellow tinged with purple.

Evergreen shrubs and trees, the most common is the banana shrub (M. figo). Rounded and dense shrub to 2 feet high and wide. Stems and new leaves are covered with tan down. Older leaves are leathery, glossy green. Michelia grows best in partial shade, but will tolerate full sun with some midday shade.
