Waterlily (Nymphaea x marliacea) - Description
Nymphaea have floating leaves that are rounded, with a deep notch at one side where leafstalk is attached. It bears showy flowers, which either float on the surface or stand above it on stiff stalks. There are two main types, hardy and tropical. Hardy types come in white, yellow, copper, pink, and red, while tropical types add blue and purple to the color range.

Water Lilies bloom through the warm season and will generally go dormant in the fall. The flowers are very showy and float on the surface of the water. Some species only bloom at night. Produces berry-like fruit.

It makes sense that these plants require full sun since they grow in ponds where little could grow to shade them. Grow in calm waters.

Plant Water Lilies in February to October in mild climates. In colder climates it's best to plant in April to July. Place the rhizome on top of soil in a wooden box that would be placed in a pond or body of water. Avoid using redwood to make the box as this will discolor the water. In best case scenarios, the surface of the water should be at maximum 1 ft. above the top of the soil.

The large floating leaves are useful for reducing algae growth because they are effective in blocking the sun. The flowers water lilies are the lotus of the ancient Egyptians, and although they bear resemblence to the lotus flowers of China and India, they are not closely related.
