Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) - Description

Phoenix dactylifera (date, or date palm) is a palm in the genus Phoenix, cultivated for its edible sweet fruit. Although its place of origin is unknown because of long cultivation, it probably originated from lands around Iraq. It grows 70–75 feet (21–23 m) in height, growing singly or forming a clump with several stems from a single root system.

Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) - Growth

Young plants do well in pots. Place in full sun with plenty of room to grow.

Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) - Planting

To grow from seed, clean the seed down to the seed coat and soak in water for 1-7 days, then sow in well drained soil and water regularly. If you want to be sure your Date Palm is female, propagate from cuttings or buy a guaranteed tree.

Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) - Interesting facts

Date Palms have separate male and female plants. Although they flower on their own, they can be induced to flower by a physical stress. Farmers that grow Date Palms for fruit will physically whip the trunks of the male and female plants at the same time in order to induce flowering at the same time.

Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) - Soil and irrigation

Does best with well-drained soil. Water freely when actively growing and sparingly in the winter.
