Argentine Mesquite (Prosopis alba) - Description

Prosopis alba is a South American tree species that grows in central Argentina, the Gran Chaco ecoregion, and part of the Argentine Mesopotamia, as well as Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru. It is known as algarrobo blanco in Spanish, which means "white carob tree". Spanish settlers gave it that name because of its similarity to the European carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua).

Argentine Mesquite (Prosopis alba) - Interesting facts

Wood is used in flavoring smoked and grilled meats. The flowers can be used for the production of honey. The fruits can be used in cattle feed. Some of the desert mesquites have the ability to prevent seeds of other plants from successfully germinating. The plant exudes a compound, believed to be L-tryptophan amongst others, that inhibits seed germination. This process is called allelopathy. Having allelopathic properties decreases the chance of competition from other plants.
