Florists' Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) - Description

Sinningia speciosa, commonly known in the horticultural trade as Gloxinia, is a tuberous member of the flowering plant family Gesneriaceae. The common name has persisted since its original introduction to cultivation from Brazil in 1817 as Gloxinia speciosa. The name Florist's gloxinia is sometimes used to distinguish it from the rhizomatous species now included in the genus Gloxinia.

Florists' Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) - Blooming

Blooms in the summer. Flowers can be pink, red, blue, white or various shades of purple.

Florists' Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) - Growth

Small perennial houseplant that grows to 1 ft. tall from a tuber. Needs bright indirect light. Gloxinias need constant warmth. If temperatures fall below 65°F/18°C at night, the plant will suffer. When the leaves senesce, move the container to a dark cool place (60°F/16°C). Mist the soil so the tuber does not dry out. Leaves should reemerge in midwinter.

Florists' Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) - Planting

When planting in a container, choose a pot that is big enough to leave at least 2 inches on each side of the tuber. Fill with soil that has a high proportion of organic matter such as peat moss or compost. Set the tuber frac12; inch deep in the soil.

Florists' Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) - Pest

Prone to aphids, whiteflies, mites, leaf miners, thrips, crown rot and nematodes.

Florists' Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) - Interesting facts

Members of the Sinningia genus are in the Gesneriaceae family. This is the same family that African Violets are found in. Much like African Violets Gloxinias cannot tolerate intense light. In nature these plants live along rocky outposts and cliffs, where the only animals that can pollinate the flowers have to fly to reach them. Some species have large enough flowers that the flowers are pollinated by bats.

Florists' Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) - Soil and irrigation

Until the first leaves emerge, the tuber should be watered sparingly. Best method of irrigation is to flood a saucer and place the container in it to let the growing medium soak up the water.
