Pond Cypress (Taxodium ascendens) - Description
Taxodium ascendens, also known as Pond Cypress, is a deciduous conifer of the genus Taxodium, native to North America. Many botanists treat it as a variety of Bald Cypress, Taxodium distichum (as T. distichum var. imbricarium) rather than as a distinct species, but it differs in ecology, occurring mainly in still blackwater rivers, ponds and swamps without silt-rich flood deposits. It predominates in cypress dome habitats.

Coniferous trees, monoecious, deciduous or semi-evergreen. Taxodiums do well in full sun. Height varies depending on variety. One species can reach a height of 100'. Deciduous shoots fall in autumn. For shoots with buds, only the leaves fall. Attractive autumn foliage. Grows well in wet or boggy sites. Will produce aerial roots on the surface of the water. Taxodium works best as a specimen tree.
