Brassica rapa 'Orient Express'

For spring crop, sow seeds indoors about 4 weeks before the last frost date. After the threat of frost has passed, conduct transplantation into the garden. If fall crop is desired, sow seeds directly into the ground in summer allowing plants to mature during the cool fall weather.Before planting, work in a 2" layer of compost or well-rotted manure into the soil. When starting plants indoors, sow seeds in 1" pots and then transplant into the garden when the seedlings have about 10 leaves. Make sure to protect the young seedlings from prolonged periods of cold (below 50°F (10°C)) and also from frost which may cause bolting.When sowing seeds directly, plant 3 seeds per hole, spaced 12-18" apart in rows 18" apart for chihli types and 24" apart for napa types. As seedlings, thin out the seedlings so that only the most vigorous one of the three remains in each hole.Transplants should be spaced similar to direct-sown seeds.
