Foxtail Lily (Eremurus bungei) - Description
Towering at the back of the sunny border, the leafless flower stalk grows 4-6 feet above green, strap-shaped leaves. They provide a long season of blooms in orange, yellow and pink; long lasting as cut flowers.
Foxtail Lily (Eremurus bungei) - Growth
Foxtail Lilies do well in full sun and can withstand some heat.
Foxtail Lily (Eremurus bungei) - Planting
Bury the tuberous roots with the shoot facing up 6" deep and space them about 1' apart. The roots are rather brittle and should be handled accordingly. Provide a wide hole when you plant the roots.
Foxtail Lily (Eremurus bungei) - Interesting facts
These plants are called Foxtail Lilies because the flowers are borne on a tall stem where they are packed relatively tightly together, the styles of the flowers extend beyond the petals giving the inflorescence a "fuzzy" look, and the flowers bloom from the bottom up, which all give the inflorescence the look of a bushy fox's tail. The tuberous roots look like starfish (or more properly named, sea stars).
Foxtail Lily (Eremurus bungei) - Soil and irrigation
Plant requires rich, fast-draining soil and will tolerate some aridity. Do not allow the plants to sit in standing water.
