The "bean" herb, used in dishes with beans, peas and lentils. Excellent as a salt substitute. Annual. Plant seeds or plants outdoors after all danger of frost. Full Sun.

Different varieties require specific soil and irrigation. S. douglasii requires rich, moist soil. S. hortensis needs light soil and should be watered moderately. S. montana needs sandy, well-drained soil and requires little to moderate irrigation. Most do best in neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Protect from excess winter moisture.
