Many would readily associate tulips with Holland; however, these flowers are not native to Northern Europe at all. Tulips were originally from Turkey, Afghanistan and Iran. They are found in the mountainous regions of those countries, which explains why they need a cold period during winter in order flower properly. Plant parts can irritate the skin upon contact.

Tulips do well with rich, sandy soil but will tolerate being planted in any good soil as long as it has fast drainage. They also require regular watering during growth and while flowering.
