Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) - Description

C. japonica bears soft bright green to bluish green foliage in season, and brownish purple in cold weather. It's branches are covered in 0.5 to 1 inch long, needlike leaves.

Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) - Blooming

Cryptomerias are monoecious trees. Female cones are borne solitary, while males are clustered, usually at the shoot tips.

Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) - Growth

Conifer with tall straight trunk, conical or pyramidal in form. Up to 50+ feet tall, 25 feet wide. Branches layering from ground to top. Needles are 1/4 to 3/4 inches long and bright green to blue green. Cones are dark brown, 1 inch around, with pointed scales. Larger species work well as screens or specimen plants. Dwarf cultivars make nice additions to a large rock garden or conifer garden.

Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) - Planting

Full sun where cool, or partial to light shade in hot areas. They do not do well in containers. Sow seeds in a seedbed or in containers in a cold frame in spring. Cold frames are protective structures, located outside for propagating and growing plants. Can also propagate from cuttings in summer.
