Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) - Description

Rhapis excelsa also known as Broadleaf Lady Palm is a species of fan palm (Arecaceae subfamily Coryphoideae, tribe Corypheae) in the genus Rhapis, probably native to southern China and Taiwan. It is not known in the wild; all known plants come from cultivated groups in China. They were first collected by the Japanese for Tokugawa shogunate palaces, then popularity spread to Europe, and later to America where its low light and humidity requirements make it a common feature in malls and offices.

Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) - Blooming

Blooms bowl-shaped, 3-petaled flowers.

Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) - Growth

Grows best in partial shade, or bright filtered light. Raise non-hardy plants indoors as houseplants or in a warm greenhouse. A warm greenhouse has a minimum temperature of 55ºF (13ºC). During the day, temperatures should be set to 55-64ºF (13-18ºC) or above, and at night, the temperature should be at 55ºF (13ºC). In hardy areas where frost is not an issue, Rhapis works well in a shady border.

Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) - Planting

Propagate from the seed in spring. Sow at 81ºF (27ºC). Conduct division in spring as well. Division entails propagating a plant by splitting it into 2 or more parts. Each part has its own root system and more than one shoot or dormant bud.

Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) - Pest

Vulnerable to scale insects, spider mites, and leaf spots.

Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) - Interesting facts

There are only 12 known species of Rhapis, native to the shady tropical and subtropical forested areas from southern China to southeastern Asia.

Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa) - Soil and irrigation

Grows best in moist soil with medium fertility and good drainage. Water liberally during the growing season, less in winter. Soilless potting mixes work well for indoor plants. Pot on, or move plants to larger containers, in spring. Can also top dress in spring.
