Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) - Description
Solanum betaceum is a small tree or shrub in the flowering plant family Solanaceae "the nightshade plant". It is best known as the species that bears the tamarillo, an egg-shaped edible fruit. It is also known as the tree tomato.
Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) - Blooming
Blooms 5-petaled flowers followed by tomato-like fruits, borne from summer to winter. The fruits are generally only edible when fully ripe.
Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) - Growth
Perennials and evergreen shrubs, trees, and climbers, found in tropical regions. Tree tomatos grow best in sun or partial shade with moderate humidity. Where Cyphomandra is not growing hardy, raise plants in a temperate greenhouse. Temperate greenhouses have daytime temperatures set between 50-55F (10-13C), and a nighttime temperature of 45F (7C). In warmer areas, tree tomatos work well in a shrub border, or a courtyard or fruit garden.
Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) - Planting
Propagate from the seed in spring. Sow seeds at 55-64F (13-18C). Root greenwood cuttings in late spring or early summer, using bottom heat. Greenwood cuttings are taken from shoot-tips of plants, and are harder than softwood cuttings.
Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) - Pest
Prone to whiteflies and spider mites.
Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) - Interesting facts
There are 30 known species of Cyphomandra, native to the margins of dry forests in the tropical regions of the Americas.
Tamarillo (Cyphomandra betacea) - Soil and irrigation
Tree tomatos grow best in soil that is fertile, moist, yet well-draining. Soil-based potting mixes work fine for indoor plants. Water liberally during the growing season, less in winter.
