Earth Star (Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Red Star') - Description

Cryptanthus bivittatus, (commonly known as Earth Star, along with Cryptanthus zonatus zebrinus) is a small, terrestrial species of plant in the Bromeliaceae family. Reaching a height of only 6 - 8 inches and preferring moderate or diffuse light, it is commonly used in terrariums and novelty planters.

Earth Star (Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Red Star') - Blooming

Blooms small, star-shaped flowers in the center of star-like leaf rosettes, in summer.

Earth Star (Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Red Star') - Growth

Earth stars grow best in partial shade, or bright filtered light, with moderate to high humidity. In areas that are tropical and humid, starfish plants work great in a bed or border. Where temperatures drop under 59-68ºF (15-20ºC), raise plants indoors, as houseplants, in a bottle garden, or in a warm greenhouse. A warm greenhouse has a minimum temperature of 55ºF (13ºC). During the day, temperatures should be set to 55-64ºF (13-18ºC) or above, and at night, the temperature should be at 55ºF (13ºC).

Earth Star (Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Red Star') - Planting

When ripe, sow seeds at 81ºF (27ºC). In early summer, conduct removal of the offsets.

Earth Star (Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Red Star') - Pest

Earth stars are prone to scale insects and mealybugs.

Earth Star (Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Red Star') - Interesting facts

Earth Stars are types of plants called Bromeliads that are known for straplike leaves and central bowl that collects water. Bromeliads are varied in their growth patterns. They can produce large fruits (such as the Pineapple) or live on the branches of trees (such as with Spanish Moss).

Earth Star (Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Red Star') - Soil and irrigation

Earth stars grow well in soil that is moist, moderately fertile, acidic, well-draining, and supplemented with fibrous organic material. Terrestrial bromeliad potting mixes work fine for indoor plants. Water moderately during the growing season, and mist with tepid water on a regular basis. Provide less water in winter.
