Easter Cactus (Hatiora gaertneri) - Description

Cacti in the Hatiora genus are epiphytic plants (they grow on other plants). These cacti grow natively on trees in the forests and rocky areas of Brazil where water can gather after a quick rain storm. The true cactus nature shows when these spots dry out quickly, creating tiny arid zones that these cacti thrive in. Get this along with your Christmas Cactus and Thanksgiving Cactus for the trifecta of color for fall, winter, and spring!

Easter Cactus (Hatiora gaertneri) - Blooming

Flower buds form on new stems in fall (they are long night/short day plants); however, they need some time and cool temperatures (around 50-55°F (10-12°C)) for the flower buds to fully develop and open.

Easter Cactus (Hatiora gaertneri) - Growth

Temperatures above 100°F (38°C) are detrimental to the plants. Does best in lower light conditions which is indicative of where they natively grow. Cacti in the genus Hatiora grow on the branches of trees, which shade the cacti. Does well with high humidity.

Easter Cactus (Hatiora gaertneri) - Planting

Plant seeds in spring when temperature are around 70°F (21°C). Cuttings should be made in summer.

Easter Cactus (Hatiora gaertneri) - Pest

Prone to mealybugs.

Easter Cactus (Hatiora gaertneri) - Soil and irrigation

Does best in humus-rich, well-drained soil that is acidic to neutral in pH.
