Hopbush (Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea') - Description

'Purpurea' is a purple bush with bronze-tinted foliage that darkens in winter.

Hopbush (Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea') - Blooming

This plant is grown for its foliage, although its fruit is often long lasting and showy.

Hopbush (Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea') - Growth

Hop Bush is a very tough shrub that can withstand poor soil, high winds and heat. Dodonaea does best in full sun, or full light. In warm areas, grow Dodonaea as a hedge or in a border. Where not hardy, raise plants in a cool greenhouse with a minimum temperature of 35°F (2°C). During the day, set temperatures between 41-50°F (5-10°C), and at night, keep the temperature at 36°F (2°C).

Hopbush (Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea') - Planting

Sow seeds in spring. Can also propagate by rooting semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Semi-ripe cuttings are cuttings taken from semi-mature wood.

Hopbush (Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea') - Pest

Spider mites may cause problems.

Hopbush (Dodonaea viscosa 'Purpurea') - Soil and irrigation

Once established, these plants are resistant to water stress and do not need to be watered very often. Dodonaea do best in moderately fertile, well-draining soil. Indoors, use a soil-based potting mix.
