Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas 'Alba') - Description

A wonderful white flowering varietal from the Spanish Lavender family. This compact, 2' high and wide, plant will be a perfect addition to your garden. Leucantha is a prolific bloomer through spring and into summer. You can extend the bloom time even further by shearing off the waning blooms of the first flowering to encourage a second round of delight! This varietal is mainly grown for its aesthetic value, but would work wonderfully for aromatherapy and or culinary options.

Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas 'Alba') - Blooming

Blooms are often purple or lavender in color, hence the common name. The flowers are moderately-very fragrant. Lavenders contain a large amount of nectar, and therefore attract bees.

Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas 'Alba') - Growth

Lavenders thrive in full sun. In climates that are too cold in the winter for year round growth, Lavenders will do fine being moved indoors on a bright window sill. Lavenders work well for drying to make potpourri.

Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas 'Alba') - Planting

Tough and easy to grow, plant this white blooming lavender in well drained fairly fertile soil for best results. Works wonderfully in a drought tolerant and or Mediterranean style gardens. Use also as a fun addition to a 'moon garden' (all white flowering plants). If starting from seed, plant into containers in spring and move into a cold frame or greenhouse. Cuttings in early summer can be rooted as well.

Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas 'Alba') - Pest

Can succumb to root rot in climates that have hot and humid summers. Other problems include root rot and leaf spot.

Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas 'Alba') - Soil and irrigation

All Lavenders are fairly tough and adaptable plants that can thrive under the most neglected situations. More than once I've seen entire gardens dried up and dead from abandonment or neglect, just to see the one bright spot of a thriving, lush looking lavender in the middle of it all! This said, Lavender can certainly live in a vast array of soil types and fertility levels. Most important is that the soil drains good to keep its roots from being susceptible to rot.
