Scorpion Vetch (Coronilla valentina) - Description
Coronilla valentina (scorpion vetch) is a species of flowering plant in the genus Coronilla of the legume family Fabaceae, native to Portugal, Spain and Croatia (Dalmatia). It is an evergreen shrub growing to 80 cm (31 in) tall and wide, with pea-like foliage and fragrant, brilliant yellow flowers in spring and summer, followed by slender pods. The subspecies C. valentina subsp. glauca (syn. C. glauca) and its cultivar 'Citrina' have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Linnaeus observed that the flowers, remarkably fragrant in the daytime, are almost scentless at night.
Scorpion Vetch (Coronilla valentina) - Blooming
The Crown Vetch will bloom lavender-pink, yellow, white, or pink, fragrant, pea-like flowers followed by slender pods.
Scorpion Vetch (Coronilla valentina) - Growth
Annuals, herbaceous perennials, and evergreen and deciduous shrubs. Will grow stems that are about 2 ft. in length. Does best in full sun. Grow Coronilla in a shrub border or at the base of a wall that gets sun.
Scorpion Vetch (Coronilla valentina) - Planting
Sow seeds in containers in a cold frame when ripe, or in spring. Cold frames are protective structures, located outside for propagating and growing plants. Can also propagate by rooting greenwood cuttings or semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Greenwood cuttings are taken from shoot-tips of plants, and are harder than softwood cuttings. Semi-ripe cuttings are cuttings taken from semi-mature wood.
Scorpion Vetch (Coronilla valentina) - Pest
Anthracnose may be a problem.
Scorpion Vetch (Coronilla valentina) - Interesting facts
Coronilla is endemic to Europe and North Africa.
Scorpion Vetch (Coronilla valentina) - Soil and irrigation
Plant should be moderately watered during the spring if there is no rain. Does best with light, well-draining soils with moderate fertility.
